During the cooler winter months, we often see a rise in mice coming indoors for warmth, shelter and food, even here in Northland.
It seems innocent enough, but whether they sneak in through gaps or are brought in and let go by a family cat, mice can cause damage to your home, office and belongings.

What you can do to curb your mouse problem
If you’re faced with a mouse infestation, there’s no immediate need to panic. There are several steps you can follow which will help you beat the wee furry pests.

Eliminate points of entry for mice
The first thing to do is to find and seal off the places where mice enter your home.
Mice commonly enter the home through gaps around where plumbing enters the house, such as under the kitchen sink, the bathroom and in the laundry. Mice are notorious for being able to squeeze through tiny holes – an average mouse can fit through a 6mm gap! A great tool to take with you when sealing potential mouse-entry points is a pen. If a pen can fit into a gap, a mouse could probably wriggle its way in too!

Set mouse traps and bait stations
Once you’ve sealed off the entrances and exits, the next step is to set mouse traps or bait stations in high-traffic areas – just look for the mouse droppings.
The best location for a mouse trap or bait station is up against a wall, as mice generally prefer the protection of running with their bodies along a wall edge.

Remove sources of food
Mice are inexorably drawn towards places where they can get a ready meal, and that place is usually the kitchen, where pets are fed or where children leave food lying around.
Check carefully around your house ensuring that mice can’t access anything they might like to eat. Make sure pet food is secured, and pay particular attention to your kitchen, examining your food storage areas and changing food containers if necessary.
