Ah, crickets. Their gentle song filling the soft summer evenings with music as they sing to each other across our gardens and our streets. And our paths. And our decks. And our lounges. And our bedrooms… Yes, cricket season is here: so how can we get rid of the little black noise machines?
Northpest has some tips and tricks to get rid of your crickets – or at least, to stop them from invading your home!
Where do crickets live, and how can I stop them?
Crickets, as we all know, love cracks. You can find them happily tucked away in cracks in the ground, cracks in your fencing, cracks in your pavement and cracks in your pathways. They also often live in retainer walls, rockeries, bark garden areas and sometimes sub-floors (the areas underneath your house) – not to mention your interior spaces, such as skirting boards and windowsill joins. While we all like a little gentle music in the evenings, the sound of 10 or so crickets inside your home can be a little less relaxing. How can you get rid of your cricket infestation? Read on!
Recommendations for cricket control:
- Fill in any cracks that appear in the ground to stop them from sheltering and breeding there.
- Cut back and clear away vegetation – crickets will nest in leaf litter, tall grasses, ivy and other ground covering plants, etc.
- Keep wood piles, compost bins and mulch as far away from the house as possible.
- Pull your curtains/blinds at night and consider using amber LED lights for outside lighting as crickets are attracted to bright lights
And if none of these ‘soft approach’ suggestions work for you, then…
