The way you tackle your rat and rodent problems will depend on what kind of dwelling you live in: from residential bungalows, to old kiwi villas and rural Northland lifestyle blocks, our residential clients all have unique needs that call for specific rat control products and solutions. When it comes to commercial and industrial rat control, it often pays to have our professional team provide a complete service: the ramifications of not successfully keeping a rat infestation under control in a commercial kitchen for example are disastrous. We’ll explain our approach to commercial rat control solutions further on in this blog.
Residential rat bait stations: villas, bungalows and urban rat solutions
If you’re experiencing a rat problem in your villa, the main issue could be the amount of gaps and cracks these older homes can have. These older villas can offer many points of entry for rats and rodents, and do require more attention than modern homes. Don’t worry however, we have the solution! When you’re looking at placing rat bait stations in an older-style home or villa, the key is to place bait stations in the roof cavities and on exposed beams in the ceiling cavities, as well as placing rat bait stations around the perimeter of the dwelling itself. Generally 6 bait stations around the outside of your home is a good number to keep your rat population under control – this is why we’ve put together our Rat Control Package Deal. The Rat Control Package contains everything you need to get your residential rat problems under control: 6 bait stations and a 1.8kg pail of Contrac All Weather Blox: this is plenty to keep you in supply for at least 6 weeks.
Where to place your residential rat bait stations
When you’re looking at placing your rat bait stations, there are some key points to keep in mind:
- Space your bait stations against the outside of your home
- Usually 6 bait stations are plenty for a standard sized home exterior
- Avoid areas where water could pool – the stations are weather proof but not flood-proof!
- If you have forest or bush on one side, concentrate on that area first
- In the roof void, we secure the bait on a wire as children and pets are not a safety issue
- For internal infestations, also place bait stations in hot water cupboards, and discretely near fridges, freezers and stoves
- Try to hide your bait stations: although they’re 100% child & pet proof, you’ll want to avoid tampering where possible!
Rural rat control solutions: lifestyle block and farm rat infestations
Managing rat infestations on lifestyle blocks doesn’t need to be a massive undertaking, quite often (on the more manageable lifestyle blocks) we recommend simply purchasing a few Rat Control Packages with extra pails of Contrac All Weather Blox to keep your rat population under control long term. Of course placing your rat bait stations around the home will be identical to an urban situation, however managing the lifestyle block rat control involves extra consideration.
Where to place your rural lifestyle block rat bait stations
- Place your rat bait stations along fence lines, around 18 metres apart
Look for areas of standing or running water, and place rat bait stations adjacently - Target utility sheds, hay barns and feed sheds/containers
- Look for ‘runways’ – this is what we call the paths rats commonly use
- Secure rat bait using wire on exposed beams within any rural structures
- Forested areas require a higher volume of bait stations
